With the Holidays now behind us, I wanted to take the opportunity to thank those parents who graciously contributed to our Tax Credit Program. This is an opportunity for our school to enhance the extracurricular options afforded our students with extending learning in our after-school programs. Parents may donate $200 for those filing state taxes as single and $400 for joint returns. We are able to provide options not normally available to us without this funding. Here is a list of several programs we have either offered this year or in years past; chorus, band, drama, chess club, Lego, tumbling, cheerleading, Zumba, chorus, Spanish, STEM and sports camps, yearbook, student council, Character Counts and National Junior Honor Society just to name a few. In addition, parents can now donate and tie those funds to our comprehensive field trips we have carefully coordinated over the years. Those start in fifth grade where they float down the Colorado River and take a trip to BizTown as they learn how to run all aspects of a small city; sixth grade adventures out to Lake Pleasant for two nights and three days studying the arid region we live in; 7th grade travels to California to Astro Camp to study our planets at a much deeper level than we can here all the while working on developing the team skills with their grade level peers; 8th grade rounds out their Comet education as they travel to Catalina Island sleeping, snorkeling, hiking, kayaking and pushing themselves to self-reflect on their own leadership skills prior to heading off to high school. We appreciate the wonderful experiences these funds offer our students here at Westar!
Please mark your calendar for Tuesday, February 3rd as this is the night our campus will be open from 5-7:00 p.m. to Showcase what’s happening in our education community. Each grade level will highlight student work and thematic units they recently completed. This will allow current students and parents to preview what their child will be doing next year. You will have a chance to meet this year’s teachers at those grade levels, see what exciting work they are accomplishing, expected field trips, and experience math through your own eyes! We hope you will join us and the PTO as they have invited all of our previous clubs to come this evening as well so you can see what exciting after-school options await you next year!!!
